Oklahoma High School Baseball Rules

High school baseball in Oklahoma is governed by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association, which has established rules for both the regular season and for playoffs and tournaments in both the fall and spring. National Baseball Federation rules apply in most instances, but games run seven innings instead of nine and some special rules have been adopted by the OSSAA, which also sets the schedule for fall and spring baseball seasons.
  1. Pitching

    • Only pitchers are restricted from playing two days in a row.

Pitchers are allowed to play a full game on a given day no matter how long it lasts or whether it goes into extra innings. Normally he cannot pitch in a second game, either in a double header or on two consecutive days if he has pitched for six innings. Pitchers who play for five or fewer innings in one game can pitch in a second game on the same day, but not for more than 10 innings in the two games combined. He is not allowed to appear in three games in a day.

    Ending a Game

    • High school baseball games end when the team with the lower score finishes its last up in the seventh inning or the next inning when one team is ahead. In Oklahoma, when one team is ahead by 10 or more runs at the end of the fifth inning, the game is over. Games called on account of weather or darkness after five innings count except in the state tournament.

    Coach Conduct

    • Baseball coaches have to accept that people, including umpires can sometimes make mistakes during a game. The OSSAA has a policy, adopted by its board of directors, of not honoring protests based on a rule situation or that would second guess or overturn the decision of the umpires officiating at a game. A coach that is thrown out of a game, leaving no assistant coach or faculty member to take over forfeits the game.
