Although debated, the NCAA gives the University of Missouri credit with holding the first homecoming. In 1911, Athletic Director Chester Brewer asked alumni to inaugurate the new field by "coming home" for a football game.
Homecoming normally centers around a football game. In recent years, other sports such as basketball or soccer have begun hosting homecomings as well.
Aside from the game, homecoming activities may include parties, a formal dance with a royal court, bonfires, tailgate parties, talent shows and a parade. Students normally decorate for these events. Students also show school spirit with their clothing.
Many classes hold reunions as alumni return home for homecoming activities.
Schools once chose their homecoming queen based on her beauty and the appearance of her float.
