Spirited Ideas for High School Game Days

The day of a big sports game in high school should be filled with excitement and spirit. Whether facing the cross-town rival or fighting in the championship game, having fans' support can be an extra motivator for athletes. From holding pep rallies to making homemade victory flags, there are many things you can do to encourage school spirit.
  1. Spirit Phrase Day

    • Create a phrase in the morning to get students excited throughout the day. For example, the phrase could be "Let's Go Angels!" or "Beat the Marauders!" Or, use your school motto, if you have one. Inform the students that a small number of faculty members and students have been designated as "phrase holders." Because the students do not know who these people are, the key is to have the phrases said to everyone throughout the day. Once the phrase is said to the correct person, the student can receive a reward or certificate that will get them ready for the game. You can also change the phrase throughout the day as you get closer to game time.

    Victory Flags

    • To show their confidence in their team and boost team spirit, students can create a victory flag to wave during the big game. Students can create one large flag to be displayed or held by the mascot during the game. You can hold a contest to have students come up with original designs for the flag. Once the flag is made, students can also make handmade, smaller versions that can be waved when points are scored, a good play is made or even to show the other team your school spirit.

    Jerseys

    • Whether you are a participant or a spectator, students and faculty members can show their school pride by wearing a sports jersey on the day of the big game. Students from every sport should be encouraged to wear their jerseys to show support for fellow athletes. The jerseys do not have to be limited to school jerseys, as students can also wear the jersey of their favorite professional athlete as well. You can also have a contest for the best creative and original fan t-shirt. The more people who participate, the better the school spirit and unity you can create.

    Pep Rally

    • A great way to end the school day is to hold a pep rally. This is one of the last chances before game time to get everyone together and prepare for the big game. If your school has cheerleaders or a spirit squad, have them perform to get everyone cheering. Encourage the captain of the team that's playing to talk to the crowd to show their confidence and to let the students know they need their support.
