How to Develop a Strong Front Handspring Vault

All competitive gymnasts need to know how to execute a front handspring vault. USA Gymnastics requires every gymnast at Level 5 or higher to perform a front handspring over the vault table. In a front handspring vault, you hurdle from the board in a hollow position, and then block off the table to land in a stuck position. Your entry into the vault sets the tone for the actual front handspring. Quick feet, fast arms and a tight body help you control the run and lead to a strong front handspring. Maintaining good form leads to the successful landing that completes the vault.

Instructions

A powerful run results in a strong vault.

Sprint down the runway, pumping your arms. Stay on your toes, building speed as you run. Look over the top of the vault table as you run, and keep your chest up.

      The hurdle exemplifies quick action.

Hurdle to the springboard, keeping your shoulders back so your feet lead onto the springboard. Lift your arms out to your sides to begin underarm circling.

Staying tight improves the position on the vault table.

Circle your arms backward and throw them up hard. Pull your arms and body upward onto the table from the underarm circle. Drive your heels at the same time to flip into a hollow position on top of the table.

Keep your body hollow through the block.

Block off the table by keeping your body tight. Shrug your shoulders to jump off the table. Squeeze your body tightly to maintain a hollow body position. Open your eyes and watch your feet to anticipate the landing.

A tight finish completes the vault.

Squeeze your thigh muscles and slightly bend your knees to stick the landing. Lift your chin and pull your shoulders up for a salute.
