Take a look at one of the all-time favorite signs at professional sporting events, the "D-Fence" sign. This sign consists of two pieces, one with the big letter "D" and the other showing a section of picket fence made up of four or five white vertical pickets and two horizontal white lines. Crowds everywhere know to start chanting "Defense, defense, defense..." when they see this sign. Simple signs could include short one or two word sayings that relate to your team, a particular song, or two word posters that identify star players like "Jumpin' Joe," or "Slammin' Sam."
You're likely to spend a lot of time when preparing for a pep rally and making the best signs. Be sure to find someone who has experience with making great pep rally signs or use an artist or designer who knows about proper design techniques. An artist or designer will know how to communicate the message for signs most effectively. They will also know how use the best color combinations to make signs that read easily that can be seen by everyone.
Make a run-through banner like the kind seen at local sporting events. These signs are typically produced on several large pieces of paper taped together or using a single large sheet. Paint team spirit messages on one side of the paper and position it where all fans can read the message. Make sure the lettering appears large enough so everyone can read it. Purchase a pre-printed, reusable breakthrough banner or construct one by hand connecting several pieces held together using Velcro. These banners provide for the perfect introduction of players at a rally.
Large-format signs made of rolled paper or many pieces of paper connected together as a roll-down banner can make an effective pep rally sign. Contact a local billboard company to acquire a large piece of vinyl, canvas or paper; perhaps even a scrap piece. Paint and decorate the large piece of material, let it dry and then attach a long length of PVC pipe to the bottom edge. Roll the material around the PVC pipe, securing it with Velcro or tied straps and hang it from the ceiling or some other structure. At the appropriate time, release the ties on the roll down banner, letting it unfurl to reveal the message of team spirit.
