- Modernist and Post-Modernist Fiction: James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, D.H. Lawrence, E.M. Forster.
- Literary Theory: Introduction to critical theory and its application to literary texts.
- Cultural and Intellectual History: Major cultural and intellectual movements of the early twentieth century.
2. Indian Writing in English:
- Poetry in English from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka: Nissim Ezekiel, A.K. Ramanujan, R. Parthasarathy, Jayanta Mahapatra, Kamala Das, Eunice de Souza, Michael Madhusudan Dutt, Toru Dutt, Sarojini Naidu.
- Indian English Fiction: R.K. Narayan, Anita Desai, Salman Rushdie, Amitav Ghosh, Vikram Seth, Arundhati Roy.
3. Drama and Performance:
- Theatre: Study of contemporary plays from around the world.
- Performance Analysis: Practical sessions to analyze and present theatre performances.
4. Creative Writing (Poetry or Fiction):
- Students choose to focus on either poetry or fiction writing, and create original works.
- Workshops and group discussions to refine writing skills.
Semester IV:
5. American Literature:
- American Literature from the Civil War to the Present: Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Toni Morrison, Ernest Hemingway, Sylvia Plath.
6. Renaissance Literature:
- Poetry and Prose of the Elizabethan and Jacobean Periods: Shakespeare (selected works), Edmund Spenser, John Milton, Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson.
- Literary Theory: Focus on early modern theories and their relevance to contemporary criticism.
7. Language and Linguistics:
- Introduction to linguistics: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics.
- Language, Thought and Communication: Interdisciplinary study of the relationship between language, thought and cultural practices.
8. Film Studies:
- Film Theory and Analysis: Key theories of film and methods of analyzing cinematic texts.
- History of Cinema: Major historical periods and movements in cinema.
9. Research Methodology:
- Planning and conducting literary research, using academic databases, and developing critical thinking skills.
- Writing Academic Essays and Dissertations: Structure, style and effective presentation of academic writing.
