Log on to the Internet. Visit the NASPE site. Download a copy of the PDF titled the Physical Education Teacher Evaluation Tool. Print out the document.
Fill in the teacher's name and the date of the evaluation at the top of page 4. Read the descriptions of the grading scale, marks 1 through 5, with 1 being unsatisfactory and 5 being excellent, which are to be awarded next to each of the assessment criteria on the Teacher Evaluation Tool.
Read pages 9 through 20 of the Teacher Evaluation Tool at least once in order to be clear about the criteria for each of the sections to be evaluated, and the items within each section.
Notify the teacher of the projected visit to evaluate a teaching lesson. Make an additional appointment with them for a follow up interview, in which they should also bring their schemes of work, class records and marking book.
Read through the NASPE Appropriate Instructional Practices Guidelines, K-12, with particular attention to the criteria for the elementary grade for the lesson that is to be assessed.
Arrive on time to observe the lesson, and behave in as unobtrusive a manner as possible so as to not disrupt the students or teacher.
Observe the lesson for at least ten minutes before starting to grade the teacher's performance, in order to give the class time to settle down and get to work.
Start filling in grades for Section 1, Instruction, such as "Instruction is differentiated for all learners." Fill in as many as are relevant to the lesson; some of the listed criteria will be relevant to senior management level decisions in the school with regard to whole school standards for PE and should be filled in later once the teacher's schemes of work have been reviewed. Note anything of significance which should be followed up on in the Comments area at the end of the section.
Begin filling in grades for Section 2, Evidence of Student Learning, placing a grade beside each category, such as "Students are able to articulate relevance and transfer of learning." Fill in as many as are relevant to the lesson; some of the listed criteria will be relevant to the interview and teacher's record keeping and mark book and therefore should be filled in later. Note down Comments as needed.
Fill in grades for Section 3, Management/Organization, such as "Instructional area is safe, orderly, and supports learning activities." Complete the rest of the sections once the schemes of work and mark book have been assessed.
Begin grading the teacher's lesson with regard to Section 4, Learning Climate, including such criteria as, "Students are recognized and praised for efforts and positive contributions." Write a few comments about the overall quality of the lesson and anything urgent that might need to be addressed at the interview.
Conduct the interview. Complete the assessment with Section 5, Professionalism, during the interview, since all of these questions refer to the teacher's role within the teaching profession.
