How to Write a Middle School Classroom Observation of a Teacher

Many teachers dread being observed. They worry about remembering all those measures they should take to make the lesson the best possible example of dynamic teaching. They may also worry that this may be the day that the students will choose to act up, or that the technology will let them down in the middle of a presentation. Somehow, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that the purpose of an observation is supportive rather than judgmental. The person who is arranging the observation and the person carrying it out should also be clear that this is the purpose and endeavor to put both teacher and students at ease.

Instructions

    • 1

Follow the pro forma instructions for classroom observations, completing the comments section, to further examine the points observed. Check that the teacher is punctual and that the classroom is correctly organized and that any equipment is prepared before the class commences. Comment on how the teacher deals with latecomers or disruptive students.

    • 2

Check that the teacher has a comprehensive lesson plan available. She should follow this lesson plan and amend it if necessary. Write in your report about the lesson plan, noting whether it has timescales and includes a variety of activities. The teacher should have addressed the issue of differentiation in the lesson plan. Comment on whether the lesson plan continues on from the last lesson and leads on to the next.

    • 3

Note whether the teacher has clearly stated aims and objectives at the start of the lesson and whether he communicates these to the students. Comment on the use of different learning methods, such as testing and group work. Write about the interaction between the teacher and the students, and the questioning carried out by the teacher and note whether all students, including the quieter ones, are encouraged to contribute.

    • 4

Give encouraging feedback to the teacher as soon as possible after the observation. Invite the teacher to comment on the experience and to raise any other pertinent issues.
