Play this game in an open area of the playground. One person starts as the stop light, and other kids stand in a single line about 50 feet away. A teacher or another child serves as the judge. The stop light stands facing the group and then shouts "green light," then turns away from the group. The kids run forward until the stop light turns and yells "red light." They must stop immediately. The judge calls people out of the game who keep moving forward after "red light" has been announced. The first person to touch the stop light gets to be the stop light for the next game.
Decide on two safe points for this game some distance apart. Use two basketball goals, for example. One person as the hen stands in the middle between the two basketball goals. The other kids as the chicks gather around one of the goals. When the hen starts calling for the chicks, they try to run to the other goal without being touched by the hen. Each chick that the hen touches joins the hen for the next round. The game continues until one chick remains. That person gets to be the hen for the next game.
Play this classic game preferably on a grassy playground area. Divide teams evenly. The teams stand about 30 feet apart, holding hands and facing the other team. One team calls, "Red rover, red rover, send Jimmy on over." Jimmy then runs and tries to break through the hands of the other team. If he succeeds he chooses one member from that team to join his team. If he fails to break through he joins that team. The game continues until all the kids are on the same side.
Choose an area of the playground with boundaries, such as the basketball court. One child starts as the tagger. Whenever he touches another child that child must freeze in place until another child comes and touches him. The tagger tries to freeze all the kids to win the game. Play another round with two to three children as the taggers.
Play this variation of freeze tag with a large plastic beach ball. Start the game by throwing the ball in the air. Whoever gets the ball is the tagger. To freeze other kids the person with the ball must throw the ball and hit a kid. A kid must freeze if the ball hits her. Whoever grabs the ball after it is thrown now is the tagger. If a child catches the ball in the air when thrown the thrower freezes. Those frozen can only be unfrozen when the person who froze them gets hit or has his ball caught. The game continues until only one child remains unfrozen.
Have children help you devise an obstacle course. Each time you play obstacle course you can make it different. Use sidewalk chalk to make a hopscotch area. Set up cones to run around. Set up Hula Hoops to either run through or spin around the body five to 10 times during the race. Use a stopwatch and see who can run the obstacle course in the quickest time.
