KS4 songwriting teaches students introductory musical composition skills with technological resources. Computers, software programs and electronic musical instruments are used as songwriting tools. Specific types of music are explored, giving students insight into the diverse intentions, talents and sometimes complex thought processes of songwriters.
KS4 songwriting instruction spans two calendar years, with students learning to compose music for special events. The students have to write journals about the process, which gives teachers the chance to keep up with the students' perceptions of the classes and related thoughts.
Upon completion of KS4 songwriting, students should have an understanding of the nature of music and how to communicate with it. Beyond composing a song, the intention of the program is to help the student develop critical thinking skills and how to integrate information.
