Effects of Yoga for Kids on School Learning

Yoga has been practiced for more than 5,000 years because of its great benefits. Yoga helps both mind and body by enabling participants to develop flexibility, strength and posture. Yoga also helps control stress and improves concentration and mood. These benefits are not only targeted to adults; children can also improve their lives by practicing it. Yoga can be especially helpful to kids' learning abilities, and parents should encourage it to help children in school.
  1. Concentration and Learning

    • Yoga helps develop concentration by practicing it. According to Kathy North, an experienced primary school teacher and Yoga instructor, if sufficient concentration can be attained, the brain can develop a relaxed state of mind more receptive to learning. Yoga practices concentration by visualization, which also helps kids develop their memory. North also explains that it is during pauses of deep concentration that the brain analyzes the information just learned. Yoga in between learning sessions can help kids relax so they can better understand the knowledge just acquired.

    Self-Discipline

    • By practicing Yoga, children learn to control their breathing and to hold certain positions. Kids learn to master themselves without the need for an adult to correct them. This helps kids learn to slow down and control their emotions. According to a study by the University of Pennsylvania, students who practice self-discipline might have a better chance at success than kids with a high IQ. Self-disciplined kids usually do their homework on time, study more, and practice sports, musical instruments or some other interest outside of school.

    Control Stress

    • Kids have more stress in their lives than older generations. Children who practice Yoga learn breathing techniques that help them relax and control stress. This ability can help them calm down in other stressful situations, especially in school. For example, kids can use the breathing techniques they learn in Yoga to focus on a hard test or to loosen up before try-outs. Kids who are at ease tend to focus more and do better academically.

    ADHD

    • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is characterized by lack of attention, impulsiveness and difficulty following instructions and rules. ADHD usually hurts school performance, even though kids with this disorder have normal intelligence. Yoga can help kids with ADHD in school by developing greater attention and concentration. Yoga also helps them improve their self-esteem and self-control, and even to get along with other children. The breathing techniques practiced by yoga help kids with ADHD relax and reduce anxiety, depression and anger. All these effects can help kids with ADHD improve their school performance.
