Strega Nona Pasta Art Activities

The children's story, "Strega Nona," by Tomie dePaola is the story of a woman who makes soup for her local village. There is something magical about her soup because it contains a special ingredient. Adding love makes an unending amount of pasta to feed the villagers. You can extend this story and develop pasta-themed art activities for kids.
  1. Pasta Jewlery

    • Create your own pasta jewelry using different sizes of dried macaroni. Use food coloring to color the pasta before starting the craft if want colorful pieces. String the pasta through soft yarn to make necklaces and matching bracelets.

    Pasta Prints

    • Purchase a wide variety of dried pastas. Include different sizes and textures such as bowties or rigatoni. Give your child a blank sheet of construction paper and ask him to use the pasta for printing a design on the paper. Provide washable paint in many colors that can be used for the artwork.

    Pasta Mosaic Picture Frame

    • Purchase a plain plastic picture frame at your local hobby store. Make a pasta mosaic frame by gluing pieces of pasta on the frame. You can color the pasta with food coloring before gluing it to the frame, or you can paint the pasta once the glue has dried. Place a picture of the child reading "Strega Nona" in the frame.
