Select a book that contains sight words. There are various books available for reading practice with Dolch words. Search Amazon.com for a list of books. Choose a topic that interests the students.
Write the sight words found in the book onto a wall chart or board. A chart will act as a visual representation of the word. Seeing and hearing the word will reinforce learning and retention.
Read the book to the class, pointing out the sight words in the book -- and corresponding words on the wall chart. Learning sight words in the context of a story, will help with comprehension.
Instruct students to read the book, after you have finished reading it to them. As they read, have each student highlight sight words you select from the wall chart. The children can highlight photocopied pages of the book.
Make flashcards of the sight words. Provide each student with index cards and markers. Read the sight word book again, and instruct children to write each sight word, as you read it. Children can practice with the flashcards alone, or with a partner.
Create a custom game or worksheet with the sight words from the book. There are many websites available with free resources.
