How to Find Percentages for One Number as Part of Another Number

The percentage of one value as part of another is related to both the fraction and the decimal. Its fractional similarity is that the problem is set up as a ratio between the two numbers; its decimal characteristic is that the problem must be transformed into decimal representation before becoming a percentage. The process of calculating the percentage amount of one number as it relates to another isn't just a series of simple operations; it's a series of mathematical transformations.

  Obtain two numbers: one that will be the part of the other one, and one that will be the base for the percentage. For this example, the number that is part of the other one is 55, and the base is 80.

  Set the part number as the numerator of a fraction, and the base number as its denominator. In the example, the two numbers become the fraction 55/80.

  Divide the numerator by the denominator to convert to the decimal representation. For this example, 55 divided by 80 results in 0.6875.

  Multiply the divided amount in the previous step by 100. For this example, the amount 0.6875 multiplied by 100 equals 68.75. So 55 is 68.75 percent of 80.
