Find clip art of athletic shoes. Make a copy for each student to write his name on. After the students have colored their shoes, put them on the bulletin board. Title the board "Kick off a Great Year".
Have the students draw their favorite athletic shoes. Then have them draw their faces on another sheet of paper. Attach the shoes to the bulletin board with the students' faces peeking out the middle. You could title this bulletin board "We're Off to a Great Start."
Make a board called "Start off on the Right Foot." Use only right shoes. You can stuff socks and place them in the shoes. (Check out the local thrift shop for inexpensive but fairly new shoes.) Cut-out pictures of shoes could also be used. Trace the children's feet on the first day of school, and scatter their footprints across the board for a background.
Create a bulletin board that reinforces the process for writing a paragraph. Make large footprints from dark construction paper. On lighter colored paper, write out one step of the writing process to put on a footprint: brainstorm, organize your thoughts, write a rough draft, proofread and edit, write the final copy. Put the footprints on the board in order. Title the board "One Step at a Time."
For a fun writing exercise, give the students an assignment to bring pictures of different types of shoes. During class have them write a story about the picture. Put their final copy of the story on the board with the picture. This board can be titled "Shoe and Tell."
