Use your bulletin board to teach students about the uniforms community helpers wear. Ask students to dress up as their favorite community helpers. Students can dress like firefighters, farmers, construction workers and many other occupations. Take a picture of each child and post the photographs on a bulletin board. Another option is to ask students to draw pictures of their favorite community helpers. Encourage them to include the appropriate uniforms in their drawings. You can also use your bulletin board as a teaching tool by displaying types of community helpers on one side and the hats they wear on the opposite side. Ask students to match the helpers to their hats.
Create an interactive bulletin board to teach students about community helpers and the vehicles they drive. Post pictures of various community helpers such as a police officer, firefighter, bus driver and paramedic down the left side of the bulletin board. On the right side, post pictures of the vehicles they drive. Place a tack beside each community helper and each vehicle. Ask students to match the community helpers to their vehicles by connecting the tacks with yarn. To incorporate your students' work into a bulletin board, have them draw and color various community helpers' vehicles. Draw roads on your bulletin board and place the vehicles on them. Another option is to create a large vehicle such as a school bus, fire engine or taxi to place on the bulletin board. Place your students' pictures in the windows.
Teach your students about the jobs community helpers perform. Create a bulletin board with the title "Who Am I?" Post pictures of various community helpers around the outside of the bulletin board, in random order. Write a riddle for each helper such as:
Fire! Fire!
9-1-1
I fight the blaze until it's done.
Who am I?
Ask students to answer the riddles, choosing from the community helpers posted on the bulletin board. Alternatively, teach lessons on the responsibilities various community helpers have. Afterwards, ask your students to choose their favorite community helpers and draw pictures of them performing their jobs. Post their pictures on your bulletin board.
Help your students learn about the buildings community helpers work in. Cover the bulletin board in green paper. Create a town by having students make buildings using paper and paint. Students can make a post office, police station, bus stop, bakery, bank, grocery store and school. Attach the buildings to the bulletin board. Use paint or markers to add roads. To create an interactive bulletin board, place pictures of community helpers around the outside of the bulletin board. Ask students to match the helpers to their buildings.
