Creative Ways to Learn Spelling Words

Learning to spell comes easily for some people, but it can be difficult for others. It is important that each student find the technique for learning how to spell that works best for him. Many creative ways exist for both teaching and learning spelling words.
  1. Word Mapping

    • Word mapping is an effective technique for some learners.

Word mapping is one way to learn spelling words. It involves breaking up the word into mouth movements. First, say the word. Second, stretch out the word by exaggerating each syllable as you say it. Third, you split up your mouth movements, or divide the word into distinct syllables. Fourth, count the mouth movements, and fifth, draw blanks on a paper for them. Sixth, fill in the blanks with the right letters that make each sound. Seventh, write the word in your best cursive handwriting. Eighth, study the spelling, paying attention to the patterns and determining which are the tricky parts. Ninth, write down the meaning of the word.

    Visual Learning

    • You may learn spelling best by studying a word visually.

You may be a person who spells best by studying the word visually. If so, first write the word using different color markers. Each syllable should be a different color. Go over the word by sounding out the different colored parts. Then write the word three times. Look up and write the most simple definition of the word.

    Tactile Learning

    • Magnetic letters are an effective way to learn spelling words.

You, your children or students may learn best by using the hands-on method. Many varieties are effective. One is using shallow sand in a plastic container in which you can spell out words with your fingers. You can also use finger paints or shaving cream. Other tactile methods include using letter stamps, magnetic letters or chalk.

    Auditory Learning

    • You can use tape recorders to study spelling words.

Another way to learn spelling words is by using them in a song. Often children sing as they play games such as jumping rope or making up rhymes. You can use a tape recorder to record the words, breaking them into syllables, and play them over and over. Another way is to use words in cheers by breaking up the word into syllables and cheering each one out loud.
