Ways to Learn English Vocabulary

Your vocabulary, the words you choose when speaking to another, reflect the education and upbringing you've had. While talking down to someone is never the goal of improving one's vocabulary, having a clear understanding of the vocabulary of others can go a long way in helping to nail down a promotion, increase your self-esteem and even give you an edge landing a job.
  1. Improve Your Vocabulary

    • There is no tool of greater value than a dictionary when building your vocabulary. Just flip open the book and point to a word you are unfamiliar with. The word, broken up in syllables, always features a pronunciation key to the right of it. The definition of the word follows, and a good dictionary will always offer a thesaurus along with it. This is a list of words generally meaning the same thing as the word you are looking at. Expressions, terms, jargon and lexicon are just a few examples of some of the words essentially meaning vocabulary.

    Repetition, or, Reiteration

    • In the space of five minutes a day, you can improve your vocabulary. When listening to music, watching a movie or reading a slice of text, you will often come across a word you have never heard, or, seen before. This is the time to slip into your five-minute pledge, pick up a dictionary and familiarize yourself with the word. Read the meaning and write it down in your own words. Periodically throughout the day, repeat the word to the point of redundancy. The word will become a part of your vocabulary. A single word improves your vocabulary. It's that easy.

    Vocabulary Games

    • There are a lot of fun ways to improve your vocabulary. Find a friend to play games like 'Upwords,' 'Boggle' and 'Scrabble' with. You'll be surprised what you can learn from someone else and pleased with what that person can learn from you. Solo games such as 'unscramble,' found in many newspapers along with 'Jumble,' offer another method of learning.
