Edible Cell Ideas

Edible cells do double duty; they are tasty, and they help kids learn about science. Most middle schoolers have been assigned this popular project, which is to create a plant or animal cell out of completely edible items. All the organelles must be made out of food and in the proper positions.
  1. Gelatin

    • The most common substance used to make an edible cell, gelatin is an easy and creative way to put a cell together. Follow the directions to mix the gelatin, and use a light colored flavor so organelles are easily seen. Pour the gelatin into a large plastic bag and let it get cold in the refrigerator until it is almost set. Then take it out and place the items that you are using for your organelles into the gelatin. Some ideas for edible organelles are candies, fruit and gummy worms. Use a large candy such as a jawbreaker for the cell's nucleus. Smaller foods such as rice grains can form ribosomes. Let the edible cell chill until you are ready to use it.

    Cake

    • Make a cake to use as your cell. A square cake would work for a plant cell, and a round cake would be a perfect animal cell. Frost the cake with white icing and use cake decorations and candies for the organelles. Jelly beans, gum balls, fruit rolls and toaster pastries are interesting additions to a cake cell. Licorice ropes can be the cell walls, and you can use food coloring to create different areas on the frosting for different organelles. Poke around the cabinets and use what you can find. Your imagination is your only limit.

    Cookie

    • Bake a large sugar or chocolate chip cookie for an edible cell. This will provide a more sturdy and flat work surface than the cake or gelatin. To get more traction for your organelles, you can spread a thin layer of frosting on to the cookie once it is cool. Decorate the cookie with sweets to use as your organelles. Chocolate chips can be mitochondria, a peanut butter cup can be the nucleus, and sprinkles can be ribosomes. Try to use cookie related toppings to create the organelles.

    Pizza

    • Pizza can make a really fun edible cell. Use pizza toppings to create your cell. The cell wall can be the pizza crust itself, and a large pepperoni can be a nucleus. Parmesan cheese looks like ribosomes, and the other organelles can be made out of peppers, cheese, pineapple and anchovies. Use all pizza toppings for a creative and tasty edible cell.
