How to Teach the First Grade About Light and Sound Online

First grade students can learn about light and sound online by playing computer games and conducting virtual experiments. Learning sites online provide teachers and students with an array of supplemental classroom activities. First grade students who can manipulate a computer mouse can play online computer learning games about light and sound. Online games help teach students about the interaction of light with objects to create shadows and sound pitch while they are having fun.

Instructions

  1. Light Games

    • 1

Navigate to a learning site, such as Science Kids or BBC Schools. Click on the link to learn about light and shadows. Read aloud to the students the instructions for the game.

    • 2

Demonstrate how to click on an object in the game area. Show the students how to click and hold down the mouse button to drag an object on the screen. Drag objects into the game area in front of the light source.

    • 3

Move the light source closer or farther away from the object in the game screen to make shadows larger and smaller. Ask the students to guess if a shadow will be smaller or larger. Demonstrate how to make the light dimmer. Ask the students to guess if the shadow will be more or less visible when the light is dim or bright.

    Sound Games

    • 4

Navigate to learning websites, such as Exploratorium or Science Kids. Turn on the computer speakers. Adjust the sound to a comfortable level.

    • 5

Read aloud the instructions for the sound learning game. Encourage the students to read along with you. Demonstrate how to use the mouse to adjust the pitch of the sound up or down.
