How to Teach Reflection Symmetry for the First Grade

Symmetry is found in the world all around us. Used in man-made designs and found in nature, reflection symmetry is the repeated design reflected exactly with an imaginary line, or line of symmetry, in the middle. Teach first-grade students to identify and create designs of symmetrical reflection. Students will become more aware of reflected patterns and be able to identify line of symmetry independently.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1
Children are intrigued by the reflections they discover in a portable mirror.

Purchase a set of transparent mirrors from a teacher supply store or from an online distributor. Allow students time to explore and make observations with their mirror before giving instructions to follow in a lesson.

    • 2

Draw one-half of a circle, half of a flower, half of a hexagon and half of a clown's face on a paper. Photocopy this practice page for each student in the class. Model placing the transparent mirror on the edge of each image, or the line of symmetry. Look through the transparent mirror and draw the reflection of each design to complete the symmetrical reflection of the image. Guide students as they practice drawing each reflection.

    • 3

Instruct students to independently draw one half of an image on blank paper. Students trade papers with a partner and use their transparent mirror to draw the symmetrical reflection of the image on the paper.

    • 4

Assign students to take the transparent mirror home. Instruct them to find an image in a newspaper or magazine to reflect on a blank sheet of paper. Students must independently draw the symmetrical reflection of the image and return the image and mirror to school.
