Tell students the title of the song, giving some background information about it. Allow students to share connections, ideas or concerns about the song.
Introduce the song by playing it on a CD player or singing it. Let students listen several times. If possible, play the song for students a few weeks before you intend to teach it so they have repeated exposure.
Create a chart with each line of the song written largely on separate lines. Discuss elements of the song, such as words that repeat, the chorus or other interesting phrases.
Sing aloud the first line and have students recite it back. If desired, create movements to accompany each line. Movements will help students recall the song and provide added interest if performing for an audience. Be careful to mouth the words without singing along when students sing it back to ensure they are participating fully.
Introduce another line by singing it and having students recite it back. Then go back to the beginning, asking students to sing the first two lines. Keep adding lines in the same manner. If it is a long song, teach each verse separately, ensuring they know each verse well enough to move on to the next.
Practice often throughout the day, challenging the students to memorize the song. Keep the task fun and energetic.
Allow students to perform from the beginning to the end without help until they can sing the whole song unprompted. You may have to reteach specific lines or verses.
