How to Measure With a Ruler for First Grade

Measurement instruction normally begins in the first grade with an introduction to the ruler. Children often begin the school year beginning to measure using small items, such as paper clips, to measure items before moving onto the use of a ruler. First grade ruler use is kept to just inches as fractional measurements can confuse young students. Teachers often use many measuring activities to provide ample ruler practice time.
