With concentration and motivation, most anyone can learn how to perform these basic tasks effectively. Focus on activities that will be helpful to all of your students. Require your student(s) to purchase a notebook that contains the letters of the alphabet at the top of the page. Usually, these notebooks contain sheets that require the user to trace the letter so that she learns how to properly write the letter. Show your students how to properly write each letter. Do this slowly so that they can see how you are developing the letter. Don't attempt to teach all of the letters in one sitting. Divide the alphabet into 5 or 6 sections.

Create word lists to help your students with vocabulary and spelling. Discuss the sheets as a class and write the meaning of each word on the board for the students to copy. Require the students to study for several days before testing them on spelling and definition. To help with spelling in general, teach your students the basics of the English language, such as the i before e, except after c rule in spelling.

Purchase a variety of large books that fit on an easel. Using a pointer, read the book slowly and point at a word as you say it. This will help your students with word recognition. Hand out beginner reading books. Doctor Seuss has a wide variety of early reader books that help with word recognition and pronunciation. Have the students go home and practice reading the books to their parents. Ask the parents to sign a sheet after the kids successfully read a book.

Create all encompassing activities. Using words that have been present on recent spelling lists, write a story that is 2 to 3 paragraphs long. Have the students copy the paragraph using the handwriting skills that they have learned. Have each student read a portion of the paragraphs aloud for the class to hear. Through the copying and the reading, the students will also be paying attention to the spelling of the words that were used.
