How to Create Free Maps for Kids

Learning geography, as well as how to reading maps, are helpful skills for children. Map lessons help children learn to think both globally and locally. They can teach students about other parts of the world, as well as show them how to navigate their own communities. While most classrooms are equipped with professionally-printed maps, kids can also create maps of their own using readily-available resources.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what area the map will cover. This may be a state, country, or even a smaller area -- like a city or town.

    • 2

Print out an outline of the chosen area from a website like eduplace.com or supercoloringpages.com. Make photocopies, or print out one for each child in the group.

    • 3

Print out photographs of important landmarks and sites from the area. Give these photos to the children for reference. These may be places like the Statue of Liberty in a map of New York City. It could also be a park, museum, government building or other recognizable place in a smaller city.

    • 4

Have children draw the landmarks on the map in pencil, and then color their drawings in with markers or crayons.

    • 5

Instruct children to glue their maps to a piece of construction paper or poster board. These can be laminated for durability.
