How to Build a Volcano Eruption

Science experiments are a way to make learning fun. It's a time to put away the pencil and paper and see science at work. You can show probability by dropping rice on a piece of paper, or construct a working solar system to show how the planets rotate around the sun. One of the most interesting experiments is the working volcano. With a little creativity and a few household items, you can make your own lava explosion.

Things You'll Need

  • Clay
  • Small plywood board
  • Small container
  • Paint brush
  • Acrylic paint
  • Baking soda
  • Liquid dish washing soap
  • Red and yellow food coloring
  • Vinegar

Instructions

    • 1

Mold the clay to the shape of a volcano on top of the plywood board. Leave a hole in the top large enough to fit a small container into. The top of the container needs to fit below the rim of the volcano hole.

    • 2

Paint the volcano and board with your choice of colors. Mountains are typically brown or gray and can have a white snow cap toward the top. The board can be painted gray to look like rocks or green to look like grass. Allow a few minutes for the paint to dry on the surface.

    • 3

Insert the container in the hole created. Add 2 spoonfuls of baking soda and 1 spoonful of liquid dish washing soap. Then add 5 drops each of red and yellow food coloring.

    • 4

Pour 1 ounce of vinegar into the container. Your volcano will now erupt.
