Chemistry Ideas and Topics For An 11 Year Old

Chemistry is not only an educational topic in schools, but it can also be entertaining for young minds as well. There are several options for 11-year-old students when choosing a topic or deciding on an idea focused on chemistry. Whether the project is for the school science fair or presented in class for a grade, there are a variety of topics from which to choose.
  1. Making Crystals

    • Tie string around a pencil, attaching a paper clip on the other end of the string. Next, with the help of an adult, boil water and put it in a Mason jar, adding half a cup of salt 1 tsp. at a time. Stir each tsp. of salt until it dissolves. Stop adding salt once it stops dissolving in the water. Put the paper clip and string into the jar, laying the pencil across the mouth and covering the top with a paper towel. Within 24 hours, crystals should form on the string.

    Water Quality Test

    • Consider showing the pH levels of different water sources. You can get water testing kits through a teacher or purchase them at a local hardware store. Gather samples of water from different sources, such as home tap water, a river or stream, a lake, and tap water at school or from a local restaurant. Water testing kits provide information such as pH, alkalinity and acidity levels. Make a chart and record results for the different findings of all water sources for presentation.

    Acids and Bases

    • Demonstrate your knowledge of acids and bases by creating a project around this topic. Show how acids and bases react when mixed together by using vinegar, an acid, and baking soda, a base. Make a list of household items that are acids, such as oranges, some salad dressings and carbonated beverages. Also present a list of common bases, highlighting such items as baking soda, toothpaste and milk of magnesia.

    Coconut Oil Lip Balm

    • With the help of an adult, add 1 tsp. each of coconut oil and petroleum jelly to a zipper-lock bag. Mix in 1/4 tsp. of grated paraffin wax. Melt the ingredients by placing the bag in a bowl of hot water. Remove the bag and lightly knead, combining the ingredients. Consider adding 10 fresh cranberries for a sweeter flavor and a hint of color. Place lip balm in small containers by cutting a corner of the bag and squeezing gently. Chill the finished product before using it.
