Math Games for Shape Patterns

Learning basic geometric shapes and identifying patterns are part of early math education. Young elementary-age students should be able to recognize and name basic two-dimensional shapes, use spatial language to describe a shape's location relative to other objects and create patterns with shapes. Children love games and learn best by doing, so these shape pattern games use manipulatives to enhance learning.
  1. Shape Pattern Memory

    • This is a memory game using patterns of shapes. Each team needs a set of pattern blocks and you need a large-scale set of pattern blocks. Divide the class into teams of five to seven students. Make a pattern with the blocks and briefly show it to the first player on each team. The players should make a copy of the original pattern by memory. Award points for correct answers. Make another pattern for the second player on each team, and so on.

    Making Patterns

    • For this shape pattern game, you will need a set of pattern blocks per team. Divide the class into teams of five to seven students each. Write a shape key on the board, such as trapezoid = A, triangles = B. Write a pattern description on the board, such as make a wall with an ABAB pattern, or make a star using an AAAAAA pattern. The first student on each team should build the pattern. Award the team a point for a correct answer. Write another pattern for the second student in each team to solve.

    Describing Patterns

    • This shape pattern game challenges students to look at a pattern and describe it. You will need a large scale set of pattern blocks. Divide the class into teams of five to seven students each. Write a shape key on the board, such as squares = A, triangles = B. Make a pattern with the pattern blocks. The first student on each team should go to the board and describe the pattern using the letters in the shape key, such a square, triangle, square, square is ABAA. Award points for correct answers.

    Finish the Pattern

    • The goal of this game is to complete an established pattern of shapes. You will need a set of pattern blocks per team and a large-scale set of pattern blocks. Divide the class into teams of five to seven students. Make a repeating pattern with the large pattern blocks, but leave out one or more of the shapes or don't finish the repeat section of the pattern. The first player on each team will duplicate the pattern and fill in the missing pattern pieces. Award points for correct answers.
