How to Draw & Label a Bee

The bee is one of the insects that are beneficial to humans. They help pollinate flowers and plants, allowing the growing cycle to continue through the seasons. Many species of bees, such as the honey bee, have pollen baskets to help facilitate pollination. The bee's body has three main parts. These are the head, thorax and abdomen. They have wings, antennae, eyes and six jointed legs.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the poster board into three sections by making light tick marks with a pencil. These will be the spaces for the three different parts of the bee's body. The head is the smallest part, so this section doesn't need to be large. The thorax is larger than the head but smaller than the abdomen. The thorax section will have four of the jointed legs and the start of the wings. The abdomen section is about twice as large as the thorax section. It will have the end of the bee, the stripes, and the largest part of the wings.

    • 2

Draw the head of the bee in the first section. Trace around the large mouth of the plastic cup with a pencil. Add large eyes similar to those found on your diagram or photo of a bee. Sketch out the antennae, the smaller eyes, and the bee's jaw (mandible). Erase and redraw any adjustments that are needed.

    • 3

Sketch out the thorax section. The thorax is more oval or egg-shaped with the narrow ends pointing left and right. It touches the head and abdomen section. The thorax is the most complicated section to draw. The wings begin above the thorax and are narrow and shaped like triangles. Four of the bee's six legs are in the thorax section. They have joints (like our knees) that are bent about one third of the way from their start. Sketch in the legs and wings using a light pencil mark. Compare your drawing to the diagram and make any adjustments.

    • 4

Add the abdomen shape to the third, and largest, section. The abdomen is a flattened egg shape, with narrow ends pointing left and right. It is two times as large as the thorax. The two legs on this section are broader than those of the other four legs. The abdomen often has stripes. The wings are also larger and rounded in this section.

    • 5

Outline your bee with black marker once you are satisfied with the drawing. Be careful to not smear the marker or go in the wrong direction. Use other markers to color the bee appropriately. Label each section: head, thorax, abdomen, complex eye, smaller eye, legs, joints, wings, etc. with the various markers. Use clear and legible writing and put lines to the correct parts of the bee.
