How to Weave for Elementary Students

Weaving is a traditional form of artwork that is easy for elementary students to learn. Weaving is the main way to create textiles in a variety of cultures. Weaving has roots in Africa, Asia and Europe. While most textile creation is now done by machines, introducing weaving to elementary school students allows them to create their own traditional textiles.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a loom for each student. Cut a 4-by-6-inch piece of cardboard. Along each 4-inch side, cut 10 1/2-inch vertical slits. The resulting textile is the perfect size for a drink coaster.

    • 2

Take a piece of yarn and wrap it around the cardboard, anchoring the yarn to the cardboard by placing it in each slit. When finished, tie the loose ends together.

    • 3

Create a small yarn ball by wrapping yarn loosely around the pointer and middle fingers. The ball should be about the size of an egg. Select a color to use as the main part of your weaving. You can add additional yarn if needed.

    • 4

Start in the top left corner of your loom. Work from left to right as you place the yarn under the first loom string and over the second one. Continue to alternate until you reach the end.

    • 5

Reverse the pattern as you work from right to left.

    • 6

Continue to weave until you reach the end of your loom. Tie off the ends and cut your weaving free from the loom.
