How to Make a Roman Chariot for a Kid's Project

Make a toy Roman chariot to help illustrate Bible story lessons or stories about ancient Roman history. Host a competition between students, encouraging them to build the fastest chariot in a race on an incline plane. Or, use the chariots to enhance the story of Elijah and the Fiery Chariot or Phillip and the Ethiopian. Ask students to save their milk cartons from lunch, making this an environmentally friendly project as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw curved lines on two opposite sides of a pint-sized cardboard milk carton. The lines start at the top of side and curve downward to about 1 inch from the bottom of the opposite edge. Make both curved lines similar to each other. Draw a line connecting the two bottom lines across the front side of the carton.

    • 2

Cut along the lines with a craft knife. Cut the top of the carton off completely by cutting across the back side of the chariot. Discard the top of the carton. The bottom is the body of the carton. Paint the chariot as desired and allow to dry.

    • 3

Cut two 3-inch diameter circles from a cereal box. Paint the circles to look like chariot wheels. Punch a hole in the center of each and attach to the back sides of the chariot with brads.

    • 4

Punch small holes in the front sides of the chariot. Thread the ends of a 6-inch piece of string through the holes and tie knots in them to hold in place. This is the reins of the chariot.
