Allow the students to produce their own crafts, such as buttons, calendars, potholders or necklaces. Devote several class periods to creating the various crafts or allow students to bring crafts from home. Measure the door and cut felt fabric to the size. Attach each student’s craft to the felt before covering the door. Make a border from construction paper that the students have decorated with a winter theme.
Using white construction paper, white felt or white batting to create a facade for your classroom door that resembles a cabin in the woods. Students can draw and color snow-covered hills, grounds with holly bushes and evergreen trees. Attach the batting, felt or construction paper to the door and adjacent walls with easy-to-remove glue or staples. Strategically place trees, shrubs, and other landscaping to appear as though you are walking through it to enter the door.
Enlarge a winter scene that you find online or in a magazine. Cut a section for each student and enlarge it as well. Give each student an sheet of white copier paper on which to simulate the piece of art they have. Encourage them to make any changes they choose as they paint or color the scene. When they have all completed their parts of the scene, assemble the pieces as you would a puzzle and paste them onto a large piece of butcher paper that fits the size of the door. Attach the butcher paper as one piece to the door.
Create a large calendar for each winter month that will fit the size of the door. Decorate the top third with a winter scene of your choice, such as ice skating, snowboarding, skiing or a snow-covered mountain. Delegate the drawing, painting and decoration to a different group for each month. Use an erasable ink pen to fill in the squares with the events that are happening in your classroom or in the school for the month.
