Create a motivational bulletin board that is all about racing. Give students race car cutouts. Ask them to decorate the cars to reflect their personalities. Cover a bulletin board with a race track image, creating vertical lines to break the track into sections. Allow the students to place their race cars at the start of the track, using pushpins to attach them to the starting line. Tell students that each time they do a desired task, such as read a book, they will get to move their cars one space.
Fill your reading area with race car cutouts to encourage students to sit an appropriate distance from one another. Make the cutouts using butcher paper in an assortment of hues. Place these cutouts on the floor in your reading area, spacing them approximately 2 feet apart. When reading time arrives, ask your students to venture to the cutouts and take their seats.
Make the desks in your classroom more engaging by outfitting them with finish flags. Give each student a petite checkered flag. Create casings with masking or duct tape to house these decorations. Tell students that when they finish their assignments they can place their flags in the casings, showing you they are done so you can collect their papers.
Display racing-themed photos of your students on your classroom wall. Take pictures of all of your students. Use cardboard or cardstock to create racing helmets. Enlarge the image of each student until the student's head fits in his helmet. Place a helmet on each image. Attach the pictures to your wall, labeling each with a student's name.
