Science Crafts on Bugs & Insects

Nothing breaks up a tedious school day like creepy bugs and insects. These leggy creatures can supplement your science or art curriculum. Invigorate your students with exciting crafts that double as learning aids about these sometimes colorful but always curious creatures.
  1. Bottle-cap Caterpillar

    • Cut a piece of green construction paper into a leaf shape. Give each kid six to 10 white bottle caps and acrylic paint. Instruct the children to glue the bottle caps to the leaf in a curvy or straight line. Have the students paint each bottle cap until their caterpillars are the desired color combination. Glue googly eyes and pipe-cleaner antennae to the first bottle cap. Paint black legs underneath the caps.

    Egg-carton Ladybug

    • Cut egg cartons so that each cup is separated, with trimmed edges. Every child receives a cup. Paint the egg carton cups red. Glue two googly eyes onto a medium-sized black craft pom pom and let dry. Glue the pom pom onto the side of the egg-carton cup, with the eyes facing out. Use a black permanent marker to make the black circles, big or small, on the ladybug's back. Twist a black pipe cleaner, cut to the desired length, around the ladybug's neck and form as antennae.

    Coffee-filter Butterfly

    • Use old-fashoned wooden clothespins.

Give each child a brown or white coffee filter and markers. Instruct the children to draw colorful designs on one complete side of the coffee filter. Give each student a wooden clothespin. Gather the coffee filter together in the middle and attach the clothespin. Glue googly eyes to the round end of the clothespin, facing out. Draw a mouth with a marker. Twist a pipe cleaner around the neck and shape it to look like antennae. Paint or color the top of the clothespin.

    Spider Pops

    • Use round lollypops for this craft.

Take four black pipe cleaners and wrap them uniformly one or two times around the base of a lollipop. The pop is the body of the spider, with the stick facing the front. Spread the pipe cleaners out to look like eight legs. Bend the bottom eighth of the pipe cleaners to look like spider feet. Bend the pipe cleaners at the mid-points to look like knees. Form the legs so the spider pop can stand on its own. Glue the eyes to the base of the pop, on top of the twisted pipe cleaner. Let it dry completely.
