How to Teach an Elementary Art Lesson With Powerpoint: Integrating Technology Into Art

Technology can be integrated into art to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Elementary school students can practice technology-related art in many different ways, such as by using a software program to make computer-generated graphics or using a drawing program to color a virtual image on the monitor. Use Powerpoint to teach students about the marriage of technology and art and all the ways in which they can use it. A child-friendly slide show can show students easy-to-understand visuals of the computer programs they can use to create art.

Instructions

    • 1

Give a brief discussion of the traditional types of art that can now be integrated into technology. Show a slide with pictures of many types of art such as paintings, sketches and sculptures.

    • 2

Make a slide showing how technology can be combined with a traditional form of artwork. For instance, show a slide with the step-by-step process that a student could use to draw a black and white picture on the computer with the mouse. The picture can then be printed out to make a coloring page.

    • 3

Display how the children can complete entire works of art solely on the computer. In the slide, show screen views from different computer programs made for elementary school students that allow them to make artwork on the computer. It may be a painting program or a program that allows them to make three-dimensional images.

    • 4

Display a slide on making a work of art with photographs. Many elementary school students enjoy the art form of photography, and computers can help them transform them even more. Show a slide that shows some of the ways you can manipulate photographs, like making a photograph resemble a painting.

    • 5

Talk to the students about how technology and art are merged even in art forms such as sculpture. For instance, one can take a sculpture that took a great deal of time to create and then make a mold to easily and rapidly create many replicas. The slide can show replicas of the Statue of Liberty or another famous statue.

    • 6

Create a Powerpoint page that discusses the practical applications of technology and art. Show a picture of a video game that uses art created on a computer. You can also discuss computer-generated art that is used for many of the television programs and movies aimed at this age group.

    • 7

Give the students their own assignments that incorporate both technology and art. They can work on a program that allows them to use clip art to create their own compositions on the computer. If you have enough computers, they can do this while you are teaching the Powerpoint lesson; otherwise they can do it afterwards.
