How to Teach Children With Speech Problems

Children with speech problems are sometimes children who have other disabilities and thus are in special education programs. Sometimes children with speech problems are dealing simply with that disability. There are several tips that you can use to teach children with speech problems, no matter what degree of severity.

Instructions

    • 1

Evaluate the speech problems that the students might have. Listen to them talk, ask them questions, and evaluate the way that they speak. Ask the help of the special education teacher if you are not sure how to evaluate a particular speech problem.

    • 2

Construct lessons based on each student's particular problems when it comes to speech. If children have a problem talking in public, you can create lessons that help them get comfortable speaking in public. If they stutter, you can create lessons that help them slow down their speech patterns and begin to speak more clearly.

    • 3

Give the students natural opportunities to practice normal speech. Often, speech problems are less prominent in a natural setting, away from the classroom. Students who might have problems but who have a chance to talk with their friends or peers are more likely to grow in their speech patterns and have fewer problems to deal with.

    • 4

Allow students with speech problems to participate in regular classroom activities and do not call attention to the problems. Many problems, such as stuttering, tend to work out as children grow and learn.
