Library Activities for Second & Third Grades

Library skills are important, even with the digital options for finding information that are now available. Second- and third-graders need to learn how to use the library to find what they need and learn about the resources that are available through the library. A skilled librarian can help with this process.
  1. Choosing Books

    • Teach second-graders how to choose the right book based on various factors, including their interests, the difficulty level of the book and the types of books written by different authors. Teach them how to find similar books to other books that they know they like and to ask a librarian for options if they need help.

    Story Time

    • Second- and third-graders can still benefit from listening to stories, poems and nonfiction material read aloud to them. However, now that they are older they should participate in discussions about the material after the reading is finished. They can learn to identify different types of material, including the difference between fiction and nonfiction and between poems and stories.

    Dewey Decimal System

    • Third-graders should learn about the Dewey Decimal System. They need to learn how to look up the book they need to see if the library has it and then find the book on the library shelves. You can make this into a game to make it more fun, with prizes given to the students who find a certain book first, for example.

    Research

    • Third-graders should also start to learn how to do research using the library on a topic of their interest. This includes finding appropriate materials and understanding what makes a good source for a nonfiction paper. They also should learn about the importance of not copying directly from their sources.
