Visual Perceptual Activities for Children

Visual perception is required to understand and interpret what you see around you. Visual perception is essential for success in school, which is why it is important to ensure that children practice and learn this highly valuable skill. There are certain activities that can help boost visual perceptual skills in children and allow them to be able to accurately analyze what they see every day.
  1. Color Recognition Activity

    • It's important for children to recognize colors. Make a color scrapbook out of a binder and blank sheets of paper. An empty notebook will also work for this project. Write a specific color at the top of each page. Collect several children's magazines and old books that contain images in all different colors. Children can cut these pictures out and paste them onto the appropriate page according to color. This helps to boost recognition of different colors and make the child aware of the multiple shades that each color can include.

    Shape Recognition Activity

    • It is important for children to be able to correctly perceive shapes. Talk about different shapes with children and allow them to draw each shape on large construction paper as you talk. Look for objects around the house, in the yard or on the playground that are made of these different shapes. Children should write down the objects they find that fit appropriately with the shapes they have drawn. For example, on the page on which children have drawn circles, they may choose to include circular signs, lights or picture frames that they encounter in their environment.

    Object Removal Activity

    • This activity will help children correctly perceive different objects and be more aware of their surroundings. Choose several small objects -- it doesn't matter what they are -- and line them up on a table or desk. Let a child study the objects for a few moments and then ask him or her to turn around. While the child is facing away, remove one of the objects and put a different object in its place. When the child turns back around, ask which item is new and which item was removed. .

    See & Remember Activity

    • A see-and-remember game allows children to visually soak up every detail they possibly can on a page of a book or magazine and be able to describe the picture once they have closed their eyes. This trains the eye to pay more attention to detail in order to commit the image to memory. Choose a picture that has a great number of details and allow the child to look at it for several minutes. Close the book and ask the child to recall every remembered detail of the page. This sharpens the skills of visual perception by teaching children to pay close attention to details.
