This is a wonderful center to reinforce how to make plural nouns. Create tic-tac-toe boards that can be written on with dry erase markers. Each square should contain a different noun ending. Additionally, you will need flash cards with singular nouns. Two children share a tic-tac-toe board and each child should use a different colored marker. Children take turns drawing a noun card. They must pluralize the noun and write it in a square that has the correct ending. The first child to correctly pluralize three nouns in a row wins the game. Children can only block a row if they draw a card that has the correct noun ending. An answer key can be included in the center so that students can check their work at the end of each game.
This center involves paragraphs with punctuation mistakes. Each child chooses the same paragraph. At the top of the paragraph, indicate the number of mistakes in the passage. The students compete to see who can find and correct all of the mistakes first. When both children are finished, they can review an answer key to ensure that they found all the mistakes and corrected them properly. This center can be modified to work on any particular type of punctuation.
Students draw a card that will be a target number. Each student writes the target number at the bottom of a lined piece of paper. Their goal is to reach that number first. One student rolls two dice and may add, multiply, subtract or divide the numbers shown. Once he determines a number based on the operation chosen, he writes it down. The next player then takes a turn. Each successive turn, players add to their preceding number until they reach the target number. The winner is the player who reaches the target number first. Players should record each equation as they work.
