Shift the kids' motor skills into high gear by taking them outside for a Super Bowl game of their own. Split your class up into two teams, and let them play two 20-minute halves against one another. Use a small Nerf football, and flags that match the colors of the teams playing in the current Super Bowl event.
Hold a competition between two classes to see who can gather more non-perishable food items for donation to the local soup kitchen. Explain that each classroom will need to work as a team, just like their favorite Super Bowl players must work together to win as a team (you can even call it the "Souper Bowl" if the children can tolerate bad puns). Have students practice math by creating a pictograph with a corresponding key, to keep a running count of the items collected. Take a class on a field trip to volunteer at the soup kitchen on the day you drop off your collected donations.
Pass out word jumble worksheets that are Super Bowl themed. Have the children unscramble age appropriate, Super Bowl-related words, such as halftime, cheer, trophy and quarterback. Have students create their own word jumble on a 3-inch by 5-inch card, using words they associate with the Super Bowl. Let students exchange their cards, and solve their peers' word jumbles.
Teach the third graders basic math, budgeting and research skills by having them plan an imaginary trip to the Super Bowl. Give them a set sum, such as $5,000, to purchase a plane ticket, reserve a hotel room, and pay for meals for a two-day trip to city in which the Super Bowl is being held. Provide access to the Internet for research, and award a trophy to the student, or students, who plan the most cost effective trip to the Bowl.
