      Gather the dirty clothing and make a pile near the washing machine. Separate the clothing according to colors with darker colors in one pile and lighter colors or whites in another pile.

      Have the student turn on the washing machine to the appropriate settings for your first load.

      Ask the student to measure the appropriate amount detergent using the measurements on the detergent packaging. At this point, marking a line on the measuring tool to assist in determining proper amounts will be useful for the next load.

      Place all the colored clothing into the washing machine and close the lid.
