How to Make Smell Jars for Lesson Plans on Sense of Smell

Smell jars, also known as smelling jars, are a fun activity for lessons about the sense of smell. Your preschool or kindergarten students will enjoy smelling each container and guessing which scent is which.

Things You'll Need

  • Small containers with lids, (empty pill bottles, baby food jars, etc.)
  • Cotton balls
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Variety of spices, extracts and/or scented oils
  • Cup or bowl

Instructions

    • 1

      Pour about a cup of rubbing alcohol into a cup or bowl.

      Dip each cotton ball into the the rubbing alcohol, one at a time.

    • 3

      Saturate the wet cotton ball with a spice, extract or scented oil.

    • 4

      Put each cotton ball into a small container and seal with a lid.
