Instructions

    • 1

Introduce the concept of fractions by explaining that everything can be broken into parts and that all parts make one whole.Tell your student that you will demonstrate this concept by making small, personal-sized pizzas.

    • 2

Give each student two balls of pizza dough. Be sure that they are at least 6 inches across when rolled out (about 6 to 10 inches across is ideal). Allow the student to place his favorite toppings on the pizza. Bake them and let them cool.

    • 3

Once the pizzas are cool, have your student look at her "whole" pizza and ask her to imagine how many parts her pizza could be cut into. Then use your pizza cutter to divide the student's pizza into how many parts he or she chose.

    • 4

Once you have divided them, continue to explain the concept of fractions. Count how many slices of pizza there are all together, then take one slice off the plate and explain how that is now 1/6, for example. Write these fractions down on a white board, chalk board, or any other place where your student can see the visual in fairly large print.

    • 5

Continue to work with your slices of pizza, making coordinating fractions each time and writing them down. Eat the pizza slices when finished.
