How to Teach First Grade Capitalization

Used to highlight the first word of a sentence or proper nouns, capital letters emphasize a word's importance, setting them apart from the rest of the words in a sentence or in ordinary parts of speech. During first grade, students begin to learn about this important part of grammar. Explain the concept of capitalization in a simple way and use activities that interest children, as they are more likely gain an understanding when they are presented with information they can relate to.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a sentence that contains capital letters on the board. Ask children if they can identify any differences in the letters.

    • 2

Point out the capitalized letters and explain to students that the first letter of the word that begins a sentence and the first letters of proper nouns and proper adjectives are capitalized.

    • 3

Distribute to students handouts containing sentences with capital letters. Provide children with highlighters. Instruct students to read the sentences and highlight the capital letters.

    • 4

Write sentences on the board that do not contain capital letters. Invite students to insert the capital letters in the sentences.

    • 5

Engage children in a capitalization race. Distribute worksheets that contain sentences without capitalization. Encourage children to read through the worksheets and highlight the words that should be capitalized. The first student to complete the worksheet wins.

    • 6

Encourage children to write their own sentences on the board using capitalization. Invite classmates to make any corrections, if needed.
