How to Make an Antiqued Map Out of a Paper Bag

Teaching history can sometimes be a dry and unexciting endeavor. Fortunately, you can make history more exciting by creating a historical craft, such as an antiqued map. Creating an antiqued map involves using fire to create the aged look of the map, so you must supervise any children taking part.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out the shape of the map from a paper bag with scissors. Cut up the side of the paper bag, then around the bottom of the bag to allow the paper bag to open up completely. This will turn the paper bag into a flat sheet. Cut around the edges of the paper bag to create uneven, varied edges like an antique map would have.

Draw the landforms and towns on the map.

Draw the landforms and towns on your map with colored pencils. Children can create forests, towns, mountains, lakes, rivers and oceans on their map. This will allow them to customize the map to suit whichever history lesson you are studying.

Singe the edges of the map to make it look old and weathered. An adult should perform this task. Light each of the edges of the map on fire with a lighter. After each edge has been aflame for a couple seconds, blow it out. Wipe off the edges with a tissue paper to remove any ash.

Rub the ash-covered tissue around the map to make it look weathered and dirty. Use light, circular motions with the tissue. Once the map is as soiled as you would like, crumple it up with your hands. Open it back up again and smooth it out. Crumple the map into a ball once again, then straighten it out again. Repeat this process two more times. The end result will be an old, antique-looking map.
