How to Build a Skeletal System

When teaching students about the human body, it can be helpful to have visual aids to enable the students to see the structures of the body first hand. For example, when teaching your students about the skeletal system, you can show them how to make a model of a skeleton out of simple craft materials. To make a skeleton model, it can be helpful to follow a few basic guidelines to ensure the skeleton is constructed correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a tennis ball in between two wrapping paper tubes and tape it into place.

    • 2

Repeat this process a second time. This will give you the leg bones of the skeleton.

    • 3

Place a tennis ball in between two paper towel tubes and tape it into place.

    • 4

Repeat this process a second time. This will give you the arm bones of the skeleton.

    • 5

Tape a tennis ball onto the end of each limb, effectively giving you the shoulder and hip joints.

    • 6

Cut out an 8-inch by 12-inch-long oval from cardboard. This will be the pelvis.

    • 7

Tape the legs by their hip joints onto the oval pelvis.

    • 8

Tape another wrapping paper tube vertically in the center of the oval pelvis. This will be the spinal column.

    • 9

Cut out two smaller ovals from cardboard measuring four inches wide by six inches-long each. These will be the shoulder blades.

    • 10

Tape the shoulder blades six inches from the other end of the spinal column tube.

    • 11

Tape the arm by the shoulder joints onto the oval shoulder blades.

    • 12

Tape a toilet paper tube into the ends of the arm and leg structures. These will be the hands and feet.

    • 13

Blow up a medium balloon, knot the end, and tape it to the top of the spinal column.

    • 14

Cut 12 strips of cardboard to measure one inch wide by 8 inches long. Tape six pieces to each side of the skeleton underneath the shoulder blades. These will be the rib bones.

    • 15

Combine six cups of flour and three cups of water in a bowl, mixing well.

    • 16

      Tear newspaper into strips.

    • 17

Dip the newspaper strips into the flour mixture, and use them to cover the skeleton in four to five layers of this paper mache.

    • 18

Allow the paper mache to dry completely. This can take up to six hours, and will cause the skeleton to become hardened.

    • 19

Paint the skeleton with white acrylic paint, and allow it to dry completely before displaying it.
