How to Build a Grey Water System

Greywater is any "used" water that exits your house, other than from a toilet. It can be used for a multitude of things, but the most popular is for garden or lawn irrigation. Building a code-compliant greywater system is a worthy goal and can be tackled in a weekend. The process itself is quite simple, with the actual construction somewhat complicated. The basic steps are outlined below, followed by links to resources regarding greywater reuse.

Things You'll Need

  • PVC couplings to fit pipe to your washer
  • 1 Inch ID PVC pipe and fittings
  • 20 ft. of Spa Hose

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the greywater device you are going to divert water from, such as a washer and dryer, sink, etc.

    • 2

Using the couplings, connect the PVC pipe to the discharge outlet on the device and route the piping to your specifications outside.

    • 3

Connect the newly routed PVC pipe on the outside of the house to a "T" connector with a shut-off. One section of the "T" will connect to and supply your landscaping/yard, while the other side will run into the city sewer system. This way, if you are putting potentially harmful chemicals, such as bleach, into the greywater system, you can direct it into the sewers.

Drill holes throughout the spa hose and spread it through your landscaping--making sure to cover it with a thick bed of mulch. This allows the water to dissipate over a great area and does not flood a single section of ground repeatedly.
