How to Make Natural Dreads

Dreadlocks have always been misunderstood. Myths abound, such as the myth that hair must be dirty in order to maintain them adequately. Naturally creating your own real dreadlocks doesn't require you to neglect your hygiene, and it can be done easily at home with ordinary materials. Natural dreads look edgy and can be washed and maintained with ease.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush all of the knots and tangles out of your hair.

    • 2

Rub olive oil on your hands, using about 1 tbsp., and then run your hands through your hair. Do this three times.

    • 3

Dip your thumb and forefinger into the olive oil and then select a section of hair measuring the size of dread you want.

    • 4

Grasp the end of the hair strand and twist in a clockwise direction. Twist your oiled hair until it is coiled all the way up to the roots.

    • 5

Secure the very end of the strand with a tiny rubber band.

    • 6

Repeat these steps with the rest of your hair. Depending on how much hair you have, or how small you want your dreads, this endeavor can take up to six hours.

Leave your hair like this for one week without washing out the oil. After a week, rinse it out and wash your hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. This allows your dreads more time to set. This also allows you to cleanse your hair while deodorizing it.
