Lady Bird Johnson was the wife of Texas's first US president, Lyndon B. Johnson. During his presidency, she devoted herself to cultivating the natural beauty of Texas, spreading wildflowers along the highways and establishing nature reserves throughout the state. One of the most famous of these reserves is her Wildflower Center, which boasts thousands of varieties of flowers. Students and non-students are welcome to tour the facilities.
The Bob Bullock Museum emphasizes Texas history above all else. Here, you'll get to see a timeline of Texas history, both before and after colonization. Original cowboy gear stands beside Civil War rifles. There is also an IMAX theater which boasts a variety of educational programming, including 3D features. The Bob Bullock Museum welcomes students and non-students, and no appointments are required except for larger tours.
If your children or students have ever recycled, they might be curious about how recycling is done. Ecology Action is a local, grassroots recycling center located in downtown Austin. They have a complete recycling facility, processing glass, metal and paper. Visiting the center can help youth understand the procedures behind conservation and glimpse the overwhelming bulk of waste products.
