Nebraska Homeschooling Laws

Some parents prefer to educate their children at home rather than send them to public or private schools. Parents may choose to homeschool for religious reasons, or they may simply feel that they can do a better job educating their children themselves. Each state has its own rules about homeschooling, and parents that homeschool are responsible for learning and following the rules in their state.
  1. Compulsory Attendance Ages

    • Homeschooled children in Nebraska must attend school from the age of 6 to 18. Parents can seek an exemption for children under the age of seven by filing a notarized statement with the board of education. Parents can seek exemption for children over the age of 16 by filing a notarized statement with the board of education. Children may graduate from homeschool before the age of 18 if they complete the homeschool program of instruction.

Required Hours of Instruction Per Year

    • Homeschooled students in Nebraska must receive 1,032 hours of instruction in elementary grades and 1,080 hours of instruction in high school grades.

    Required Subjects

    • Students in Nebraska must receive instruction in language arts, health, math, science and social studies. Parents can choose to homeschool their children in other subjects as well.

    Teacher Qualifications

    • Homeschool teachers or instructional monitors do not have to meet any particular qualifications in Nebraska unless the student's parents pay someone to teach their child.

    Information Summary

    • A parent or parent representative must file an Information Summary every year with the board of education that states when the school term will begin and end. The Information Summary must also include a list of all instructional monitors-- the people that will take responsibility for the student's education in the homeschool.

    Parent or Guardian Form A

    • Parents must sign the Parent or Guardian Form A and file it with the board of education. The form states that either the parents believe that sending their child to school would interfere with their own decisions regarding their child's education or that it would violate their religious beliefs. This form also states that the child will receive instruction in all required subjects and that the parents believe the person or persons monitoring the child's instruction are qualified to do so.

    Birth Certificate

    • Parents or guardians must submit a certified copy of the child's birth certificate to the board of education.
